Library Mission Statement
The Mission of the Glen Carbon Centennial Library shall be to provide all residents of the library community with reliable information which meets their needs and interests, as well as to provide materials for leisurely and recreational pursuits. The library shall seek to identify with community needs, to provide services and cooperate with organizations, agencies, and institutions which shall enable the library to provide an efficient center for personal enrichment and self-education.

Information Literacy


A library that provides Information Literacy service helps address the need for skills related to finding, evaluating, and using information effectively.

Goal I
GCCL will provide state of the art access to a variety of information resources to meet community needs.

1.1 Increase the number of public access computers and workstations by 50% by the end of the first year of the planning cycle.
1.2 Increase links from the GCCL web site to valid sites arranged by subject area by 50% by the end of the planning cycle.

1.3 Allocate 1 % of budget yearly for electronic collection development.

1.4 GCCL will keep abreast of constantly changing technology by allocating 1 % of the personnel budget yearly to ongoing staff development.

Goal II
Residents will have opportunities to learn how to find and evaluate information in a rapidly changing technological world so that they can use new information technology effectively.
2.1 People of all ages, but specifically seniors, will receive training to help them develop skills related to finding, evaluating, and using information found in print, non-print, and electronic resources.
2.2 Online instruction classes (Internet and Web Catalog) will be provided and promoted by the library staff and via the web site, etc.
 


Current Topics and Titles


A library that provides Current Topics and Titles helps to fulfill community residents' appetite for information about popular cultural and social trends and their desire for satisfying recreational experiences.

Goal III
Residents of Glen Carbon will have access to current and popular materials and engaging programs that stimulate their thinking, expand their knowledge of contemporary culture and society, and add enjoyment to their leisure time.

3.1 Increase new fiction and non-fiction circulation by 10% by 2005, as compared to 2004. 3.2. Achieve an increase of 10% in visits to the Library in FY2005.
3.3 Attendance at Adult Programs will increase annually by 5%.
3.4 The library will continue to publicize its new acquisitions via the website.
3.5 Improve visual appeal and access to new materials.
3.6 Investigate pricing for leasing multiple copies of popular titles to meet reader demand.

Goal IV
Young teens (ages 12 to 15) will have improved access to library materials and to programs that specifically meet their interest and needs, thereby encouraging love of reading and contributing to their positive social development.
4.1 The size of the young teen browsing collection will increase in size by 5% each year of the
planning cycle.
4.2 Begin a CD music collection FY2005, thereafter allocating a minimum of3% of materials budget annually. 4.3 Increase advertising/marketing of teen materials in Library newsletter and website.
4.4 Space for young teens will increase in the new library building by 100% in FY2005.
 


General Information and Lifelong Learning


A library that offers General Information and Lifelong Learning service helps meet the need for information and answers to questions on a broad array of topics related to work, school, and personal life and addresses the desire for self-directed personal growth and development opportunities.

Goal V
The library will ensure that all print and electronic resources will be available to all patrons. 5.1 Continue to facilitate delivery of books and audiovisual materials to the homebound.
5.2 Increase public awareness of large print book collection through the library newsletter and website.
5.3 Increase patron awareness of interlibrary loan services and the automated catalog and request system through library newsletter and website.

Goal VI
Residents will have easy access to information in a variety of formats that will enlighten and inform them about current issues and topics and popular culture.
6.1 Develop collections in areas of particular interest to Glen Carbon patrons, i.e. travel, self-help, biography, and history. .
6.2 Increase the number ofperiodica1 subscriptions by 5% each year of the planning cycle.
6.3 Conduct 4 library programs per year for adults.
6.4 Conduct 2 library programs per year for young adults.
6.5 Size of the audiovisual collection will increase by at least 5% each year of the planning cycle.

Goal VII
Preschool children and their care givers will have a rich store of programs, services, and materials to stimulate their learning and their love of reading.
7.1 Story time attendance will increase by at least 10% each year of the planning cycle through increased publicizing in the local newspaper, library newsletter, and website.
7.2 Increase library outreach to local preschools.
7.3 Increase library's materials budget for children materials by 10% each year of the planning cycle.

Goal VIII
The library will provide the elementary, middle school, high school, and at-home students with materials that will supplement and complement the curriculum of their schools.
8.1. Develop a greater understanding of the Glen Carbon schools' curriculum through cooperative meetings with the school librarians at least twice per year.
8.2 Maintain an acquisitions program that will supplement the schools' curriculum.

Goal IX
The library will provide trained staff skillful in determining users' needs and in locating relevant information. 9.1 Provide continuing education for staff and encourage attendance at workshops to better assist patrons in locating materials in subjects and topics of interest.
9.2 The library will continue to develop, maintain, and promote a web site that offers general information on resources, services, and programs.
9.3 Selected Dewey areas of print reference materials will be surveyed for currency in each year of the planning cycle.


Commons


A library that provides a Commons environment helps address the need of people to meet and interact with others in their community and to participate in public discourse about community issues.
Goal X
Residents will have a modern library facility that is a welcoming and user friendly place for independent reading and learning, for enjoyable new learning experiences, and for meeting and connecting with others to share common interests and ideas.
10.1 New Library facility will be completed in the Sununer 2004.
10.2 Promote meeting room and study room space to the community via Library newsletter, Village and Chamber of Commerce newsletters, and library website.
